Estimation of Snow Water Equivelant Using a Parameterized Snow Scattering Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
Active microwave sensors, especially high-frequency radar systems, are highly sensitive to snow pack parameters, including Snow Water Equivalent (SWE), which is a crucial parameter in the studies of hydrology and climatology. For example, studies using Ku-band observations from scatterometer QuickSCAT and POLSCAT have shown significant radar backscattering responses on SWE variations. It has become an important objective to develop SWE inversion techniques for high-frequency radar systems, such as TerraSAR-X, QuickSCAT and a dual band, high-frequency (Xand Ku-Band) SAR system for the proposed mission Cold Regions Hydrology High-resolution Observatory (CoReH2O).

A parameterized multiple-scattering model for microwave emission from dry snow
Snow water equivalent (SWE) is one of the key parameters for many applications in climatology, hydrology, and water resource planning and management. Satellite-based passive microwave sensors have provided global, long-term observations that are sensitive to SWE. However, the complexity of the snowpack makes modeling the microwave emission and inversion of a model to retrieve SWE difficult, wit...

In this paper, we evaluate the capability of a multi-scattering microwave emission model that including the Dense Media Radiative Transfer Model (DMRT) and AIEM to simulation of dry snow emission with Matrix Doubling approach. We compared the predictions of this model with the ground experimental measurements. The comparison showed that our snow microwave emission model agreed well with the exp...

Snow is a huge water resource in most parts of the world. Snow water equivalent supplies 1/3 of the water requirement for farming and irrigation throughout the world. Water content estimation of a snow-cover or estimation of snowmelt runoff is necessary for Hydrologists. Several snowmelt-forecasting models have been suggested, most of which require continuous monitoring of snow-cover. Today mo...

Given the importance of snow, it seems necessary to predict its resultant runoff for optimized usage. In addition, due to snowbound regions cloudiness in winter season, the notice of snow cover area (SCA) using satellite images is difficult. Hence, to help better water resources managing in mountainous areas using supplementary methods for simulating the SCA is necessary. As a case study, Horo-...
